Molecular Devices' QPix 400 Series Microbial Colony Pickers automate the identification and transfer of microbial colonies. The system uses intelligent image analysis under white or fluorescent light to select colonies based on phenotypic criteria such as fluorescence, size, proximity, or a zone of inhibition. It has a reported throughput of up to 3000 colonies per hour under white light and 2000 colonies per hour using fluorescence. The device supports various plate formats, including deep-well plates, and can also perform ancillary liquid handling tasks. A key feature is its high picking efficiency, cited as greater than 98%, achieved through specialized pins and sensors. Sterility is maintained through integrated UV decontamination, pin washing, and drying systems. Accompanying software provides tools for process control, data tracking, and managing complex screening protocols.
