The Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Fusion Lumos Tribrid Mass Spectrometer is a high-performance instrument designed for advanced analytical applications. It integrates multiple mass analyzer technologies, including a quadrupole, Orbitrap, and ion trap, within a single platform. This tribrid architecture facilitates complex experimental workflows such as the detailed characterization of post-translational modifications, relative quantitation using isobaric tagging, intact protein analysis, and multi-stage mass spectrometry (MSn) for small molecules. Key hardware features encompass an ion source designed for high sensitivity, a segmented quadrupole mass filter for enhanced selectivity and ion transmission, and improved vacuum technology to optimize ion delivery to the Orbitrap analyzer. The system also includes ETD HD for higher-capacity electron-transfer dissociation fragmentation. Recent innovations integrated into the platform are the Advanced Peak Determination algorithm for more intelligent data-dependent acquisition and optional hardware modules. These include a UVPD (Ultraviolet Photodissociation) fragmentation source utilizing a 213 nm laser and a 1M option that provides ultra-high resolution up to 1,000,000 FWHM for distinguishing isobaric species. The instrument has a mass range extending to m/z 6,000 in Orbitrap-only mode and offers resolving power from 7,500 to 500,000 FWHM at m/z 200.
