Indicating Drierite

Description

Indicating Drierite is a chemical desiccant composed primarily of calcium sulfate (CaSO4, ≥98%) with a small addition of cobalt chloride (CoCl2, <2%). Its primary function is to absorb atmospheric moisture within enclosed environments like desiccators or drying tubes. A key characteristic is its visual indicator property: the material appears blue when in an active, dry state and transitions to a pink color as it absorbs water. This pronounced color change provides a clear signal that the drying capacity is being exhausted and the agent may require regeneration or replacement. The compound can be reactivated through heating for repeated use. It is commonly employed in laboratory settings where maintaining a known dry atmosphere is necessary for preserving samples or reagents.
