Manufactured by Malvern Panalytical, the Hydro Insight is a dynamic particle imaging system that provides morphological data to complement particle size distributions obtained from laser diffraction instruments like the Mastersizer 3000. Its core technology is based on capturing high-speed images of individual particles within a flowing dispersion. The system employs a xenon flashlamp for illumination and a high-speed 5-megapixel CMOS sensor (2592 x 1944 pixels) capable of capturing frames at a rate of 127 per second. This allows for the imaging of particles as small as 2.2 µm. For each analyzed particle, the system saves a thumbnail image for subsequent review and generates quantitative shape and size parameters. Reported metrics typically include particle width and elongation, offering insights into particle morphology that laser diffraction alone cannot provide.
