Description
The FLUOstar Omega from BMG LABTECH is a multidetection microplate reader that combines filter-based optics with an integrated UV/Vis spectrometer, an approach the manufacturer calls Tandem Technology. This configuration allows for high-speed absorbance spectral acquisition alongside sensitive filter-based measurements. The instrument performs readings in multiple modes: fluorescence intensity, FRET, luminescence, BRET, and UV/Vis absorbance spectra. The effective wavelength range is 240 nm to 900 nm, depending on the selected mode. Measurement speed is approximately 9 seconds for a full 96-well plate and about 16 seconds for a 384-well plate. An optional Atmospheric Control Unit (ACU) allows independent regulation of oxygen (1% to 19%) and carbon dioxide (0% to 20%) levels within the chamber, which is useful for cell-based assays. Additional features include plate shaking, incubation up to 65°C, and support for plate formats up to 1536-well. The system is controlled by BMG LABTECH's Omega Reader Control software and the MARS data analysis suite, which provides tools for protocol setup, data processing, and compliance with regulations like 21 CFR Part 11. Available accessories include a microplate stacker for automation, specialized filter modules, and validation plates for instrument qualification.
