Description

The PCE-CSM 4 is a contact-type colorimeter intended for direct measurement of surfaces that may be wet or uneven. Its defining feature is a 20 mm aperture that seals against the sample during measurement, which helps prevent contamination from liquids and is particularly useful for analyzing food products like meats and fresh produce. The device utilizes a 45°/0° optical geometry, aligning illumination and viewing angles to closely match how the human eye perceives color. Measurements are provided in the L*a*b* color space with a resolution of 0.01, covering a range of 0 to 100 for L* (lightness) and -128 to 127 for the a* (red-green) and b* (yellow-blue) coordinates. Beyond food, this instrument is also applicable for color assessment of various plastic materials, including PP, PE, PET, ABS, and EVA, as well as powdered substances. It features automatic white and black calibration, is powered by an integrated rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and is designed to operate in ambient temperatures from 32 to 104°F. The unit is supplied with data analysis software and arrives with a manufacturer calibration; an optional ISO calibration certificate is available.
