Description

The Axon Axoporator 800A is a micropipette-based electroporation system designed for targeted molecular delivery into individual cells. It operates by applying controlled voltage pulses to create transient pores in a cell membrane, allowing normally impermeant molecules and ions to enter. This single-cell electroporation technique provides precise control over which cells are modified, offering a significant advantage over bulk methods when working with isolated cells, tissue slices, or intact preparations. The system is ready for use without a computer, requiring only a microscope, micromanipulator, and micropipettes to complete the setup. Its compact design facilitates placement near a microscope. Users can select from three different pulse types, configurable in either polarity, and can employ pulse trains for flexible waveform generation. The unit includes an automatic and manual counter to track electroporation commands. It delivers a voltage range suitable for single-cell applications, supporting an optional headstage (AP-1A-0.1MU) with a current passing range up to ±100 µA. An integrated audio monitor with a headphone jack provides auditory feedback as the pipette approaches and contacts a cell. A resistance display aids in locating cells within tissue slices even without visual guidance. Pulse initiation can be controlled manually via the unit or a foot switch, or synchronized with a computer for integration with electrophysiology experiments. A sync output BNC connector allows synchronization with external recording systems.
