Description

The AXIMA-iD Plus from Shimadzu is a microbial identification system that utilizes MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. It is designed for the rapid and reliable identification of cultured microorganisms, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast, fungi, and spores. The system operates by analyzing characteristic protein fingerprints obtained via MALDI-TOF MS, with reported identification recovery rates up to 98%, potentially extending to the sub-species level. In a high-throughput mode, the system can process up to 380 clinical research samples within approximately five hours. The workflow involves directly applying cultured samples to a MALDI target for analysis on an AXIMA series mass spectrometer. Results are presented in a spreadsheet format that can be exported to common data processing software. This method is presented as an alternative to traditional biochemical identification techniques, potentially reducing hands-on time and operational costs.
